As part of an annual holiday crackdown, the California Highway Patrol will be also out in full force through New Year's Day.
Beginning at 6:01 p.m. on Tuesday, the CHP will kick off its Maximum Enforcement Period, deploying extra officers who will be on the lookout for drivers impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. The enforcement period will run through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.
During the agency's extra enforcement period during Christmas, five people died in California in just 30 hours within the CHP's jurisdiction, the agency said. What's more, officers arrested over 300 people for driving under the influence. That's an average of one DUI arrest every six minutes, officers said.
Last year over the New Year's enforcement effort, CHP officers made a staggering 892 DUI arrests statewide.
“Our officers are committed to working through the holidays to ensure everyone can reach their destinations safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Safe roads are possible when every driver makes responsible decisions behind the wheel.”
