Police said fatigue may have been a contributing factor to the crash.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A man was pronounced dead and another suffered minor injuries as a result of a solo-vehicle crash in unincorporated Santa Cruz County early Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. For reasons not yet determined, an 18-year-old man from Santa Cruz lost control of his 2001 Chevrolet Suburban on southbound state Highway 1 north of Mar Monte Avenue around 2:50 a.m.

The young man's car struck a guardrail and overturned down a steep embankment, CHP officials said. A 29-year-old man was in the passenger seat and was not wearing his seatbelt, CHP officials said. He was ejected from his vehicles and died.

The 18-year-old driver was wearing a seatbelt. He was taken to Watsonville Community Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Fatigue is alleged to have been a contributing factor to the crash, and the driver was not arrested, according to the CHP. The passenger's identity is not yet being released by the Santa
Cruz County coroner's office.
