11 Cases Of Whooping Cough Reported In Santa Cruz County
Health officials said the illness can last up to 10 weeks.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Cases of whooping cough in Santa Cruz County have increased from five in 2017 to 11 in the first four months of 2018, county officials reported. Early symptoms of whooping cough can include a runny nose, low-grade fever, mild, occasional cough and apnea or paused breathing in babies.
After one to two weeks, these symptoms can progress to coughing fits following by a high-pitched "whoop" sound, vomiting during coughing fits and exhaustion. Although coughing can become more exhausting and frequent as the illness continues up to 10 weeks, officials said subjects appear to be doing well in between fits.
Officials said people should seek medical help if the cough becomes increasingly severe, even if they have been vaccinated for whooping cough. More information is available at https://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/.
