15 Left Homeless in Riverside Apartment Fire

Santa Cruz Firefighters saved a burning building, but an evening fire made five apartments at 801 Riverside uninhabitable Sunday.

Firefighters were called to the five-unit building near Broadway where two upstairs apartments were in flames just before 5 p.m. and they saved $750,000 of adjacent structures.

But the $150,000 of damage, including from smoke and water, made the units unfit to live in. Five residents were housed by the Red Cross.

The fire department used four engines, one tanker, one helicopter and one battalion chief and 19 firefighters to quickly stem the blaze.
