Animal Shelter Cuts Adoption Fees In Half For 2 Weeks

SANTA CRUZ, CA — For the next two weeks, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter will cut its normal adoption fees by at least half to find homes for its animals.
Much of shelter's available cage and kennel space is occupied, animal shelter general manager Amber Rowland said Monday, due to a slow-down in adoptions and increased animal intakes.
Currently, the shelter houses 74 dogs and 180 cats, and 23 dogs and 115 cats in foster care.

The adoption fees for puppies and kittens under six months will drop to $105 and $60, respectively from the usual $210 and $125.
The fees for adult dogs and cats will drop from $150 and $110, respectively, to $75 and $55. Rabbits of all ages can also be adopted for $35, down from $75.

In addition to the half-off special, the shelter will waive adoption fees for six dogs, two cats and four rabbits that have been at the shelter for more than 60 days.
"Our shelter remains very full. We have an incredible selection of pets of all ages and personalities, including dozens who, remarkably, have been waiting a month or longer to find a new home," Rowland said. "We hope this promotion will encourage families to open their hearts and homes and give these pets a chance at love in a new home."
The "Summer Love" special launched Saturday, June 15, and will run through Sunday, June 30.
The shelter's adoption fees include spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, flea and tick services, microchipping and a license for dogs that will live in Santa Cruz County, according to the press release.
The shelter at 1001 Rodriguez St. in Santa Cruz is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Prospective adopters can also browse adoptable pets online at www.scanimalshelter.gov.
Those who cannot adopt an animal, Rowland said, can also consider fostering, volunteering at the shelter and donating.
