Firefighters found a resident had been caught in the fire and died there.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A person died Monday morning in a house fire in the unincorporated Santa Cruz County community of Ben Lomond, a spokesman for the Ben Lomond Fire Protection District said today. The person's name is not yet being released by the Santa Cruz County coroner's office.

Several people called 911 just after 7 a.m. to report the fire at 235 Larita Drive, engineer and fire district spokesman Dan Arndt said.

"It came down as a possible rescue," Arndt said.

The first firefighter to arrive assessed the fire and called for a second alarm. Firefighters found a resident had been caught in the fire and died there. The fire was out by about 8 a.m.

The home had been modified into multiple apartments and eight people were displaced, according to Arndt.
The American Red Cross came out to help those people with temporary housing. The fire destroyed the home. Arndt said the cause of the resident's death and the origin and cause of the fire are under
investigation.
