Blaine St. Women's Jail Facility To Reopen In Santa Cruz County

The Blaine Street facility houses incarcerated women who are considered low- to medium-risk.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A women's jail in Santa Cruz is reopening on Saturday after being closed for more than a year, county sheriff's officials said. The facility closed in October 2016 because the number of minimum-security inmates who were eligible to stay at the jail was dropping, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

The Blaine Street facility houses incarcerated women who are considered low- to medium-risk. The facility opened again to create a healthy environment for incarcerated women despite the small population, sheriff's officials said. Sheriff Jim Hart said in a statement that the upgraded building will have "robust programming," will allow family visitation and facilitate the inmates' re-entry to their communities.
