Chanticleer County Park Receives $500K Grant

New designs were announced for the proposed 4.5-acre park nine months ago.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Santa Cruz County has received a $500,000 grant from the National Park Service to help build the first phase of Chanticleer County Park in Live Oak, county officials said Wednesday. Master construction plans for the park on Chanticleer Avenue were initially completed in 2011 but it lost funding in 2012 when the state defunded all redevelopment agencies.

New designs were announced for the proposed 4.5-acre park nine months ago. The designs are a collaboration between the county, Shane's Inspiration, a national nonprofit dedicated to playgrounds inclusive of children with disabilities, and the Santa Cruz Playground Project, a community volunteer group.

According to county officials, the first phase of the park, which is expected to cost $4.7 million, will feature a playground, restrooms, paved parking, and improvements to the existing community garden, bike pump track, and off-leash dog areas.

More than $2.1 million has been raised for the park, with the Santa Cruz Playground Project more than halfway towards its goals of contributing $1.9 million.

Santa Cruz County communications manager Jason Hoppin said no timeline has been announced for further development phases, but they include plans for tennis courts, picnic areas, landscaping, and renovations to the historic Miller House, with the total costs projected at $8.5 million.
