CZU Fires Burn 85,000 Acres; 46% Contained
Nearly 1,500 buildings have been destroyed in the flames.

SAN MATEO-SANTA CRUZ COUNTY LINE, CA — The CZU Lightning Complex, an 85,467-acre group of fires impacting San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, is 46 percent contained as of Wednesday morning.
The fires have caused one fatality and destroyed 1,490 structures, including 925 residences. Approximately 13,000 people remain evacuated. Cal Fire Chief Mark Brunton said on Wednesday morning that further repopulation could happen in the coming days.
He said utility companies are doing a lot of work to repair infrastructure, and expects the state Highway 1 corridor to reopen in the near future.

Returning residents should expect traffic interruptions as fire and utilities equipment continue operating in the area.
Resource assistance centers are open at the Kaiser Permanente Arena, 140 Front St., Santa Cruz and at Pescadero Elementary School, 620 North St., Pescadero.
