Driver Who Saw A Pedestrian Walking On Highway 1 Loses Pickup Truck

When officers arrived, the pedestrian jumped into the truck and took off, police said.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A driver who saw a pedestrian on a remote stretch of state Highway 1 lost his pickup truck on Friday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

The pickup's driver alerted the CHP after seeing the man on the highway near Davenport. When officers arrived, the pedestrian jumped into the truck and took off, police said in a Facebook post on Saturday. Officers attempted to stop the pickup, but its driver evaded the CHP and fled into San Mateo County.

The CHP said the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office finally stopped the pickup by deploying a spike strip on the road to flatten its tires.

The driver, a 39-year-old Santa Cruz resident, was taken into custody and accused of felony evasion, driving while intoxicated, possession of a stolen vehicle and assault on a peace officer, according to the highway patrol.
