Exit Interview: 5 Questions For Outgoing Councilmember Katherine Beiers
Katherine Beiers has served on council the way she does marathons: she's been in it for the long haul.

After serving 16 years on the Santa Cruz City Council, Katherine Beiers says she wants to do something easy during her time off: run more marathons.
There are few people in the world like Beiers, who at 79, finished the Boston Marathon in five and a half hours this year. Her 16 years on the city council is also a marathon. She's been a strong voice through some of Santa Cruz's toughest times, including the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
She is more of a sprinter in her emailed answers to Patch's questions.

1. What were your favorite accomplishments during your time on the council?
Keeping the 10 library branches in the County open and ending this fiscal with a healthy reserve fund and surplus in the budget. Also not installing parking meters on Water Street and Soquel Ave. Just two of many.
2. What was your biggest disappointment?

Reducing funding for the Community Programs.
3. What advice would you give to the person taking your seat?
Listen to the community, they elected you.
4. If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
I wouldn't have voted "no" on allowing dogs downtown. The program is great. Seeing dogs downtown is fun, delightful and has not been a problem.
5. What will you do now and what will you do with all your newly free time?
Instead of running one marathon a year I will ratchet that up, continue to take 100-plus mile hikes worldwide, of course visit family and the 10 grandchildren with 6 in college. Play bridge and continue to serve on Boards, the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, the Homeless Service Center and look forward to joining the Friends of Long Marine Lab Board of Directors. Not to worry, I shall be engaged.
