"Find My iPhone" App Locates Stolen Santa Cruz Cellphone

A 55-year-old Santa Cruz man in possession of an alleged stolen iPhone wasn't found during the course of a typical police investigation.

SANTA CRUZ - A 55-year-old Santa Cruz man in possession of an alleged stolen iPhone wasn't found during the course of a typical police investigation.

He was found by an app.

According to the Santa Cruz Police Department, Alex Dugas, whom police describe as a transient from Santa Cruz, was found recently in the 400 block of Front Street with the alleged stolen phone in his possession.

Police had utilized the "Find My iPhone" app to track the phone. The owner of the iPhone had reported it stolen from a downtown business.

Police say Dugas also had a large metal pry bar with him.

Alex Dugas was arrested for possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools.

The Santa Cruz Police Department encourages residents to enable the security features on their electronic devices whenever possible. If your electronic device is missing, you can track its location.

Police say if your phone has been stolen, call 911. They do not recommend taking independent action to attempt to recover stolen property.
