Fire Burns Power Poles, Culvert Causing $20K In Damage

At the scene, firefighters found two power poles burning and fire coming up from numerous storm drains.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Fire crews on Monday extinguished a blaze that burned two power poles and an underground culvert in Santa Cruz, causing about $20,000 in damage, fire officials said. Firefighters with the Santa Cruz Fire Department responded around 11:50 a.m. to an area near Mission and Swift streets for a report of a vegetation fire.

One their way to the scene, firefighters learned that a power pole was on fire in the area and that a utility substation was being threatened. At the scene, firefighters found two power poles burning and fire coming up from numerous storm drains. Firefighters ultimately found an underground culvert had caught fire along with the power poles.

After an aggressive attack, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, protecting the exposures and utility systems. No injuries were reported. Police and fire investigators are looking into what caused the fire.
