FRIDAY MAY 17

What: Eat Like a Greek Food Faire
Where: Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, 229 Church St.
When: 5-10 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday; noon-8 p.m. Sunday
Cost: FREE
Why: This annual event is a must for food lovers. And now the great Greek cooks have been stressing healthy and local foods in conjunction with the Cabrillo Farmers Market.


SATURDAY MAY 18

What: Third Annual Rejuvenation Festival
Where: San Lorenzo Park
When: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Cost: FREE
Why: Three stages of entertainment and more than 80 vendors of healthful products and ideas. Solar, veggie, instant karma, alternative healing, cool kids things including wild animals. This fest has got it going.

Some of the performers include Gina Rene, reggae star Prezident Brown, the Luminaries, Felicity OceanSong, the Reggae Angels.

What: Castroville Artichoke Festival
Where: Downtown Castroville
When: Saturday/Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: $10/$5
Why: This vegetable just doesn't get enough attention, but here it is center stage. More info, click here.

What: David Knopfler
Solo Show
Where: Kuumbwa Jazz Center
When: 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $23 advance/$28 at the door
Why: David co-founded Dire Straits with his brother, Mark and has that same wandering cowboy urban minstrel sound. In fact, he sounds more like the original Dire Straits than his brother, who has wandered into a more world music vein.

The show was supposed to be a duo, but his guitar partner got sick. He's hunting up some Santa Cruz friends to share the stage.

SUNDAY MAY 19

What: Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Nisene Marks Park
Where: The Mary Easton Picnic Area, which
is 1.6 miles beyond the entrance
kiosk and .6 mile beyond
George's Picnic Area parking.
When: 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Cost: FREE
Why: Ribbon cutting for new ADA Waggoner Trail. Speeches by Zach Friend and Supervising Ranger Bill Wolcott. Living history lumberjack demo. Barbecue ($3). Music and storytellers, crafts and face painting for kids. More info? Click here.

What: Grind Out Hunger Awards
Where: Pono Hawaiian Grill, 120 Union St.
When: 2 p.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: FREE
Why: Cool music, food and help support Santa Cruz's hottest charity, which has gotten young surfers, skaters, rappers, cyclists, into helping end children's hunger.

What: Celebrate Oaxaca with a Guelaguetza
Where: Harbor High School
When: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Cost: $10
Why: Anyone who has been to Mexico's mountain southern city falls in love. They say Oaxaca is true to Oaxaca (pronounced Wa-Ha-Ka), because it was so isolated, the Mexican government stayed away and left its colonial feel.
The city's biggest celebration is a two-weeks long dance festival and this one day at Harbor High School captures a taste of it. And, what you may not know, the best Mexican food is from Oaxaca!
