Hazmat Spill Prompted Closure Of Santa Cruz Streets Thursday

Nearby residents and businesses in the area were told to shelter in place with their doors and windows closed.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A hydrochloric acid spill shut down streets in Santa Cruz last Thursday morning, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department. Firefighters responded to the 200 block of Laurel Street just before 7:30 a.m. and found that about a gallon of liquid had spilled from an unmarked container, producing a vapor.

Nearby residents and businesses in the area were told to shelter in place with their doors and windows closed. Laurel Street was closed from Pacific Avenue to Cedar Street, according to the fire department.
The hazardous materials team responded and after testing the spilled substance determined it was hydrochloric acid. They cleaned up the spill and are working with the owner of the acid to dispose of it.
