House Fire Kills 2 Pets, Causes $500K in Damage to Santa Cruz Home

BREAKING: Fire officials said neighbors were evacuated from neighboring homes on Delaware and Plateau avenues.

A fire Wednesday in a Santa Cruz home killed two pets and caused $500,000 in damage, fire officials said. Firefighters responded at 4:37 a.m. to 947 Delaware Ave. where callers said they heard an explosion toward the rear of the home and saw a large fire.

Police evacuated neighboring homes on Delaware and Plateau avenues, according to fire officials. The fire spread quickly to the living area of the home as its three occupants fled through the front door. The first crews to arrive saw smoke and fire coming through the front door and a window.

After confirming no one was inside, firefighters started extinguishing the blaze and had it under control in 20 minutes. But the fire left the home uninhabitable, at least temporarily, fire officials said.
