'Indies First': Famous Authors Will Sell Books on Small Business Saturday

The writers, who want to show support for local bookstores, will meet readers at Bookshop Santa Cruz on Small Business Saturday this week, sign books and give suggestions to readers.

Following suit with what performers have done with record stores on Record Store Day, 700 authors across the country will appear at local bookstores, meeting and greeting fans.

Launched by author Sherman Alexie, whose books include Smoke Signals and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, the authors want to give some value added to the stores that sell their books. The promotion ties in with the Saturday shopping campaign promoting spending holiday dollars at home called Small Business Saturday held this year on Nov. 30.

The authors who will be at Bookshop include childrens' author Paul Fleischman, whose work includes The Matchbox Diary, Seedfolks, Bullrun and Whirligig (see all of his books here).

Mystery author Laurie R. King and teen writer Jill Wolfson will also appear. King's latest is about a killer overseas called The Bones of Paris. See all of her works here. Jill Wolfson's latest is a mix of teenage angst and magic called Furious, set in Santa Cruz. Poet Patrice Vecchione will also be there.

As part of the promotion anyone who spends $10 on an American Express card on Saturday in one of the small businesses, will receive a $10 credit on their card.

Here's the schedule:

Paul Fleischman (The Matchbox Diaries, Seedfolks, etc.) 10-12

Jill Wolfson (Furious) 12-2
