Patch Readers Say Zoccoli's Makes the Best Sandwich in Santa Cruz

The family-owned deli has been in business downtown since 1946--an eternity in Santa Cruz business years.

When American Idol finalist James Durbin returned to town for his homecoming concert, the first place he stopped was at i for a Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich.

Not a bad endorsement for a business that has been in the same family for three generations making made-to-order sandwiches for the busy downtown.

They liked it so much, they named the sandwich for him.

Patch readers liked it too, with 42 percent of the votes cast going to Zoccoli's. Patty Zoccoli, who has been working behind the counter and running the store for 25 years, is used to the recognition. Santa Cruz weekly readers selected the business as the top sandwich maker 20 times.

"Zoccoli's downtown has the best and they are super cheap too," said Julian Faras, whose family owns . "I'm also pretty sure that they are the only sandwich shop in town, unless you count Togo's, Subway or Quiznos. I've lived there my whole life and I can't think of any other sandwich shops."
