Police ID Man Fatally Shot In Santa Cruz Monday

BREAKING: Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A man who died Monday night after Santa Cruz officers found him suffering from several gunshot wounds near the Laurel Street Bridge has been identified, police said. Samuel Isaias Marroquin, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene, after officers responded at about 10:20 p.m. to an area near the San Lorenzo River Levee and the Laurel Street Bridge.

There, officers found Marroquin unconscious, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body. Officers and paramedics rendered aid to him, but they were unsuccessful.

Officers canvassed the area and found several bullet casings, according to police. Police have not identified any suspects and are seeking a possible motive. They've also obtained surveillance video from the area and are seeking additional information.

Marroquin had a history with drug use and several prior contacts with law enforcement, police said.
