SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — The driver involved in a 2014 crash in Santa Cruz County that killed another person has been convicted of second-degree murder and other crimes, Santa Cruz County District Attorney Jeffrey Rosell announced Thursday. Marquis Edwards, 26, was found guilty of second-degree murder, evading a peace officer causing death, evading a peace officer against traffic and driving on a suspended license, prosecutors said.

On Aug. 9, 2014, at 2:18 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers saw Edwards speeding in his vehicle on Graham Hill Road. When officers tried to pull Edwards over, he made an illegal u-turn and led officers of a high-speed chase, prosecutors said. Edwards eventually crashed the vehicle after colliding with a wall, and Gwynne Chai Coye was killed in the crash.

Prosecutors said Edwards had alcohol in his system and 13 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle.
At the time of the crash, Edwards was on probation for a prior conviction for evading a police officer and for driving under the influence.
