On 4th of July I went down to Santa Cruz and while driving down highway 1 at Swanson road I noticed some unique roadkill -- an American Badger.
Gone from most of the bay area including the peninsula and east bay, the badger has evaded me for a while, unfortunately I was not able to catch one alive for my first encounter.
This particular healthy adult had its head hit by a passing vehicle, because they are so bottom heavy and low to the ground it was probably no fault of the driver however it is a good reminder that our wildlife is something to be vigilant over as we drive down rural roads in our wild Bay Area.
