Santa Cruz Co. DA's Office Reaches $700K Settlement
An internet background check company agreed to change its website and sales practices.
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — The Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office on Thursday announced a $700,000 settlement with an Internet background check company.
The company, CheckPeople, LLC, based in Delaware and with its principal place of business in Orlando Florida, will also pay $50,000 in restitution to go along with the $700,000 in penalties, prosecutors said.
As part of the consumer protection settlement, the company, which operates checkpeople.com, has agreed to change its website and sales practices to protect California consumers, prosecutors said.

A judgment was filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Thursday, and the terms of the settlement were negotiated by the California Auto Renewal Taskforce and a task force that included prosecutors from Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Clara, Santa Monica and Santa Cruz County.
