Jail Disturbance Resolved By Santa Cruz County Deputies

Officials said the inmates, who were upset by the cold temperatures, used mattresses as makeshift barricades and prepared tools for combat.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Santa Cruz County sheriff's officials restored order to the main county jail Tuesday afternoon after inmates became disruptive and refused to obey jail staff orders. Over the last several days, male inmates residing in a housing unit at the jail became increasingly concerned about cold temperatures in the unit, sheriff's officials said.

Maintenance crews worked to increase the temperature above 70 degrees and jail staff provided inmates with extra blankets. According to sheriff's officials, on Monday inmates became increasingly disobedient and disruptive. They also used mattresses as makeshift barricades and prepared tools for combative purposes.

Correctional staff spent hours trying to resolve and deescalate the disturbance, but inmates refused to comply with orders, sheriff's officials said. Just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, sheriff's officials entered the jail's housing unit to restore safety and order. No one was seriously hurt, sheriff's officials said.
