Santa Cruz Participates In Mattress Recycling Program

From California Bye Bye Mattress: More than 50,000 mattresses end up in U.S. landfills each day. The City of Santa Cruz is participating in the California Bye Bye Mattress recycling program to help decrease this statistic. Old mattresses and box springs will be accepted from the public free of charge on Saturday, June 24, at 207 Natural Bridges Drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Bye Bye Mattress trailer at this location will accept a maximum of five items per vehicle. The City also accepts mattresses and box springs free of charge Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as part of the Bye Bye Mattress recycling program at the Resource Recovery Facility, 605 Dimeo Lane.

Bye Bye Mattress is administered by the Mattress Recycling Council, a non-profit organization created by the mattress industry and certified by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery. The council developed and manages the state’s mattress recycling program required by the Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act enacted in 2013.

The program is funded through an $11 recycling fee that is collected when a mattress or box spring is sold in California. Consumers will notice this fee as a separate line item on their receipt. The fee is used to pay for collecting, transporting and recycling discarded mattresses, and also establishes a fund that helps municipalities battle illegal dumping.
