Santa Cruz Pedestrian Killed By Suspected DUI Driver ID'd

The elderly woman was fatally struck as she tried to cross the street near 5320 Soquel Drive.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A Santa Cruz woman who was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver on Saturday has been identified Monday by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office. Kathryn Ray Stokes, 86, was struck and killed at about 5 p.m. as she attempted to cross the street near 5320 Soquel Drive in the unincorporated community of Soquel.

The driver who struck Stokes, identified as Julissa Guzman Ortiz, 21, of Watsonville, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ortiz was allegedly driving west in a Lincoln LS when she struck Stokes. Ortiz initially left the scene but was later located and arrested, CHP officials said.
