Santa Cruz Police Catch Early Morning Thief Stealing $1,500 of Bikes

The suspect was arrested around 7 a.m. Thursday.

Santa Cruz Police staked out the area around the 300 block of Chestnut Street Thursday morning after a report that a man was in the backyard of a residence trying to steal two bicycles.

The officers arrived seconds after the call and caught a man in the yard who had burglary tools, including cable cutters and was on probation for thefts and drug crimes.

They arrested Brant Monnett, 46, on suspicion of attempted grand theft, possession of burglary tools and probation violation.
