Santa Cruz Wharf Closes After Water Line Burst
High surf from El Nino storm cells may have caused the damage underneath the structure. Officials hope to reopen by the end of the week.

SANTA CRUZ - A damaged water line forced the city of Santa Cruz on Sunday to close the Municipal Wharf.
According to city officials, Santa Cruz fire and water crews arrived at the area Sunday morning and found a significant break in the water main that provides water to Wharf businesses. There is speculation that high surf may have played a role
Due to the extreme current surf conditions and the length and severity of the break, the city says it is unable to repair the damage immediately. Temporary domestic water service in the area is being set up until permanent repairs can be made.

City officials say the Wharf will remain closed until further notice.
The City will reopen the Wharf once temporary water service is restored, and only after testing determines water quality meets safe drinking levels.

Officials say they expect that a permanent fix will occur later this week, depending upon surf conditions.
