Sheriff's Deputies Help Santa Cruz Fire Quench Thursday Blaze
The early morning fire caused $1,000 of damage.

Firefighters in Santa Cruz were able to put out an apartment fire early this morning, fire officials said.
Crews responded to a report of a fire at an apartment, located at 200 Button St., at about 12:20 a.m., officials said.

Santa Cruz County sheriff's officials responded to the scene of the fire before firefighters were on scene and partially extinguished the blaze, which originated in a bedroom, fire officials said.
When firefighters arrived, they finished extinguishing the fire.

Discarded smoking materials with combustibles led to the fire, and the resident at the apartment awoke to the blaze due to a malfunctioned smoke detector, officials said.
The apartment sustained $1,000 in damage.
No one was injured in the blaze.
