Teen Probationer Chilling At Foster's Freeze Arrested After Discovery Of Loaded Gun In Waistband: Police

Police said the 16-year-old suspect is a known gang member.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Police arrested a juvenile on suspicion of firearm-related offenses Saturday in Santa Cruz, police said. Around 10 p.m., a police officer on a routine patrol observed the 16-year-old male suspect in the area of the Fosters Freeze restaurant located at 229 Laurel St. The suspect is a known gang member, had previous contacts with law enforcement and was also on probation, police said.

According to police, when officers approached the suspect, he turned away and allegedly reached for the waistband area of his pants. Officers believed the suspect had a weapon and took him into custody. During a search of the suspect, officers found a loaded firearm in his waistband area.

The juvenile, from Santa Cruz, was arrested on suspicion of violating probation, possessing a loaded firearm in public and participating in a criminal street gang, police said. His name was not released because he is a juvenile.
