The Week Ahead: Famous Authors and Beaches to the Dogs?

MONDAY

Author Sherman Alexie will speak at Santa Cruz High School at 7 p.m. as part of a big program by Bookshop Santa Cruz to bring in famous authors. Alexie has written War Dances and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Alexie, who grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation, is a fascinating speaker whose latest works are geared toward young adults.

TUESDAY

To Dog or Not to Dog

Tuesday Dog lovers and haters will want to attend the county Parks and Rec Commission's meeting at 6:30 p.m. to go over proposals for letting dogs off leash on county beaches. 

Nothing heats things up more than a discussion of dogs on beaches. 

The meeting is at the Simpkins Family Swim Center, 979 17th Ave. 

Tillie Olsen Tribute

At 7 p.m. Bookshop Santa Cruz pays tribute to writer and feminist Tillie Olsen with speakers Julie Olsen Edwards, Bettina Aptheker, T. Mike Walker, and Susan Freeman for a conversation and reading of the new Tillie Olsen collection, Tell Me a Riddle, Requa I, and Other Works.

"Santa Cruz was a second home to Tillie Olsen, the internationally honored writer, feminist, and social justice activist who wrote about the lives of working class people."
