This Ain't Your Ma's MAH

Remember when museums were boring? Not in Santa Cruz anymore. Once a jail, then a place to look at things on the wall, the Museum of Art and History has become the hottest place in town.

The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History was awash in books Friday night and will hold Winterpalooza Saturday.

Words pushed out Art Friday night in the three-story old stone building that was once a law enforcement center. Words became Art. Art became Words.

Families and UCSC students and folks on dates and mingling singles spent Friday night interfacing with that once cutting edge technology: words put on print and distriburted to the masses.

There were art pieces made from old books; people lined up to make their own colorful paper; writers talked about their work; magazines were published right there. Heck, there was even poetic grafitti scribbled on the stairs.

Kids had a great time making paper, Valentine's cards, monster bookmarks. So did everyone else.

Saturday families will build snowmen out of bottle caps, link up with the Balloon Art Brigade, create DIY snow globes,  do finger knitting, start a resolution chain, and more.  There will be face painting and music from the Santa Cruz Beach Bums Ukulele Band. Sweet and spicy treats include constructing the Santa Cruz GingerBoardwalk and a hot chocolate bar to keep you warm & cozy.

PS: It's all only $5.
