Two Fall for Computer Scam, Santa Cruz Police Warn
Phone scam targets computer users with a fake virus protection offer.

If someone calls claiming to represent Microsoft and offering you virus protection, don't go for it.
Santa Cruz Police say two people have fallen for a scam in which a caller tries to sell a virus protection plan from Microsoft.
They will sound like a remote call center, police say. If you don't want it, they will offer a free trial which they say they will download and install immediately. They ask for access to your computer over a service called "View My PC."
They then tell people not to use their computers while the program is downloading. When you come back, you will find they are using your bank accounts.
Here's a warning directly from the police blog:
We cannot say this enough…..
- NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give access codes to anyone over the phone that you do not personally know.
- NEVER, NEVER, NEVER allow the remote download and install of any product you do not know.
- Report suspicious calls and sales scams.
