Vegetation Fire Breaks Out Near Highway 1

The fire was quickly extinguished by the Santa Cruz Fire Department and Cal Fire.

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Firefighters extinguished a vegetation fire that broke out Saturday afternoon in Santa Cruz.

At 12:20 p.m., crews from the Santa Cruz Fire Department and Cal Fire responded to the blaze near the intersection of northbound state Highway 1 and Western Drive.

According to Santa Cruz fire officials, crews arrived at the scene and found a quarter-acre grass and brush fire moving upslope in the Moore Creek Preserve.

With help from a Cal Fire aircraft, firefighters quickly attacked the blaze and had it under control in about 30 minutes. The fire was extinguished and contained to two acres and did not spread to nearby homes,
fire officials said.

No injuries were reported and firefighters determined that the fire was caused accidentally.

The northbound lanes of Highway 1 were blocked while firefighters battled the blaze.
