West Cliff Drive Closures Expected For One Week
The City of Santa Cruz begins repairing erosion on the West Cliff Drive bluff, west of Woodrow Avenue. Rip Rap will be brought in.

SANTA CRUZ - Repair of erosion damage on the West Cliff Drive bluff - west of the intersection with Woodrow Avenue - begins Saturday, and is expected to last about a week.
The City wants residents to expect traffic impacts in the area through the weekend and into next week. The City expects the work be done by Saturday, Feb. 6.
During the construction period West Cliff Drive will be closed to traffic from Woodrow Avenue to David Way; one lane will be open in the evenings and daytime hours when there are breaks in construction work.

According to city officials, this West Cliff Drive bluff face has experienced a rapid rate of erosion due to large swells, up to 20 feet high, generated by the series of powerful coastal storms in the past six weeks.
The City says its Public Works Department has been developing a plan to protect the path from erosion for some time. As the situation worsened, plans were expedited to place large boulders, or rip rap, on the rock shelf to arm the face of the bluff against wave action.
