SANTA CRUZ, CA — Firefighters responding to a nighttime brushfire Monday on the University of Califorina at Santa Cruz campus noticed and handled a second wildfire about a mile away, officials said.

The initial fire was reported about 8:15 p.m. and support from a second fire company was requested, with the fire brought under control less than an hour later.

Members of the second fire company coming to the scene spotted a column of smoke and a threatened structure and proceeded to that fire. The crew called for more personnel and contained the second fire, checking to be sure it hadn't spread to the building, which was unoccupied.
