Wildlife Groups Plot Capture Of Santa Cruz's Nefarious Surfing Otter

Trained marine wildlife crews are working to retrieve a sea otter that was recently seen acting aggressively and stealing surfboards.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Marine wildlife experts from Monterey Bay Aquarium and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife are working together to safely capture a sea otter that has quickly earned itself a reputation in Santa Cruz.

Videos and pictures of the otter have spread quickly across social media in recent days, showing the 5-year-old female acting aggressively toward surfers and even stealing their boards over the weekend.

According to KTVU, wildlife experts say the behavior is "concerning and unusual," and will attempt to catch the otter for evaluation. It's not their first encounter with the creature either. State wildlife officials told the TV station that the otter was born in captivity, after her mother was removed from the wild for showing aggressive behavior, and cared for until it was released into the wild.
