Woman In Critical Condition Following Suspected Solo DUI Crash In Santa Cruz Mountains

BREAKING: The driver, a Santa Cruz man, 38, made a slight left on the roadway, striking a power pole with the right side of his car.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — An Arizona woman suffered serious injuries in a suspected solo DUI crash in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver, a 38-year-old Santa Cruz man, was driving a Land Rover south on Bean Creek Road, just past Morgan's Run outside Scotts Valley, when he made a slight left on the roadway, striking a power pole with the right side of his vehicle.

The man tried to drive the Land Rover to a medical facility to get help for his female passenger, heading south on state Highway 17, and then speeding down state Highway 1 with a damaged right tire. On the sweeping right curve of the Soquel Avenue off-ramp in Live Oak, the Land Rover traveled onto the center island and became disabled, CHP officers said.

CHP officers and paramedics provided first aid, transporting the woman to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where she remained in critical condition on Monday. The driver was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and was also treated for minor injuries, CHP officers said.
