Charges Filed Against Santa Monica Shooting Murder Suspect
The District Attorney filed charges for the Santa Monica murder and two additional crimes committed in LA, authorities said.

SANTA MONICA, CA — During the investigation of a shooting murder that occurred last week in Santa Monica, detectives discovered the suspect may be responsible for additional crimes in Los Angeles.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, the suspect Kayla Mackie is also accused of armed robbery and attempted homicide in LA. On Jan. 30, the Los Angeles District Attorney filed charges for the Santa Monica murder and the LA crimes.
“Last week’s senseless killing on 29th Street has left all of us shocked. My heart goes out to William’s family and friends, and my thoughts are with all who were affected by this tragic event. While nothing can take away the pain this incident has brought to our community, I am proud of the outstanding police work our officers showed to quickly apprehend the suspect and ensure she is brought to justice," Santa Monica Mayor Phil Brock said.

2600 block of 29th Street. Officers located the victim, who was identified as 46-year-old William Edwards III, seated in his parked car.
Paramedics transported Williams to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to his injuries.
The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Mackey. According to police, Mackey was experiencing homelessness at the time of her arrest.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
