Fair is foul, and fouls are unfair

The Lighthouse Saints played some unsaintly jungle ball, losing to Westmark Tuesday

The Lighthouse Christian Academy racked up 14 fouls among its six player in the season opener against Westmark School of Encino, which it lost 27-56.

"We did much better than I expected," said Coach Zach Scribner. "We've never played together as a team. The fact that we almost led the game at one point is very impressive. Very encouraging. In the second half, it got away from us."

The Saints were lagging only slightly at half 19-21. That's when the Lions roared, picking off the the Santa Monica team's slow passes and muscling their way into the key for a string of 2-pointers.

LCA, a team of freshmen and sophomores, didn't bow or break. The played aggressive -- too aggressive. And sloppy. They committed 14 fouls in total, most of them in the first quarter.

Westmark made only three fouls.

Westmark was bigger, stronger, faster on the court. LCA had trouble making rebounds and relied on 3-pointers to compete. The Saints made seven 3-pointers to the Lions' three.
