Hearing on Release of Bulger's Girlfriend to Be Continued

A decision is not made on whether Catherine Greig will be released from prison.

A Monday hearing on whether James "Whitey" Bulger's longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, will remain in jail while awaiting trial was continued until Wednesday.

The hearing Monday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Boston went longer than expected, lasting nearly two hours, as details of Greig and Bulger's time on the run were revealed. The couple in Santa Monica in June after 16 years on the run.

Greig's attorney sought to have her released on bond and be confined to a relative's home while her case pends. She faces a charge of harboring a fugitive for accompanying Bulger on the lam. Bulger fled Boston in 1996 to avoid facing a slew of murder charges and other allegations.

Prosecutors allege Bulger either directly committed or ordered others to commit 19 murders in the 1970s and '80s while he was one of the most prominent figures in Boston organized crime. On Wednesday, he pleaded not guilty to 32 charges, including 19 counts of murder, in an arraignment hearing.

The alleged mobster, former head of Boston's notorious Winter Hill Gang and FBI informant from South Boston disappeared in the mid-'90s and became one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives.

His corrupt relationship with FBI agents proved to be an embarrassment to the agency, and he fled when an agent leaked to him word of an impending indictment. When Bulger was caught, the FBI was offering a $2 million reward for information that led to his capture.
