UPDATE: Search Ends for Possible Missing Swimmer Off Santa Monica Pier

Witnesses reported a man clinging to a pylon near the pier but lifeguards have decided to end the search after six attempts at finding him.

Los Angeles county lifeguards have called of the search for a possible missing swimmer off the Santa Monica Pier on Sunday morning, a fire captain said.

A person was reported clinging to a pylon of the pier at around 1:59 a.m., Capt. Brian Jordan of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

"When we got there, we saw a person hanging on to the railing," Jordan said. "Once we pulled him off, that person had indicated that there was a person in the water clinging to a pylon."

Lifeguards don't know for sure at this point if there is a missing swimmer in the water, he said. But there were credible witnesses so that's why the department is looking.

At 11 a.m., LACFD lifeguard dive team is in the water making its "fifth or sixth" search, Jordan said.

The effort to locate the swimmer ended at 11:30 a.m., after six different searches, in “different variations,” he said.

The swimmer was described as a man in black clothing, Jordan said

The surf was around 4 to 7 feet high and the water temperature was around 55 to 60 degrees at that time, according to the LACFD Lifeguard Division.
