Santa Monica To Commemorate 9/11 With Ceremony

Four community fire stations will hold commemorative ceremonies the morning of Wednesday, September 11.

SANTA MONICA, CA — The Santa Monica Fire Department will commemorate 9/11 Wednesday at four community fire stations. City staff, as well as the public, especially neighbors of our fire stations, are encouraged to attend promptly at 6:45 am. The ceremony should last no longer than 20 minutes, the SMFD press release said.

The participating stations are: Station 1 (1444 7th Street), Station 2 (222 Hollister Avenue), Station 3 (1302 19th Street) and Station 5 (2450 Ashland Avenue).

"Wednesday marks 18 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and Shanksville, PA," the press release said. "2,977 perished that day, of whom 343 were firefighters, 60 were police officers, and 8 were private EMT or Paramedics. All told, 411 emergency personnel died on September 11, 2001. To honor their memories and selfless sacrifice, the Santa Monica Fire Department will hold its annual remembrance ceremony consistent with the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ recommended protocols."

An artifact from the Ground Zero site resides on the second floor of the Public Safety Facility just outside the Santa Monica Fire Department’s administration office and is open for viewing by the public during normal business hours, the press release said. The Public Safety Facility is located at 333 Olympic Drive, Santa Monica CA 90401.
