Santa Monica Parents Invited To Dual Immersion Orientation

SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District parents are invited to learn more about Edison Language Academy, a dual immersion program offered to Santa Monica and Malibu kids, the district announced.

A series of informational sessions — both virtual and in-person — will be held for parents of children who are entering transitional kindergarten or kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year. Parents can learn about the dual immersion program at Edison and how to apply.

Here's how to sign up to attend an information session in December.

For an online webinar, parents can sign up for one of these sessions:

• Dec. 2, 5 p.m. Spanish; 6:30 p.m. English
• Dec. 9, 5 p.m. English; 6:30 p.m. Spanish

Anyone who wants to attend an in-person tour on campus must have a health screening, be masked and practice social distancing, according to the district. Tours will be on Saturdays during the following dates and times:

• Dec. 4: 9 to 11 a.m. in English; 9:30 11:30 a.m. in Spanish
• Dec. 11: 9 to 11 a.m. in English; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Spanish

People who have children entering first through fifth grade are welcome to attend and learn more in 2022.

"Space beyond Kindergarten is very limited and admissions decisions will not be made until May/June 2022," according to the district.

All applicants will be language screened to make sure that Spanish skills are adequate to access a program where students are already reading, writing, and learning content through Spanish.

"Edison is a public school and part of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District," according to the district. "However, it is not a neighborhood school. Because the dual immersion model and Edison admissions criteria are so different, applications are only available upon family completion of an orientation session."
