Series Of Rain Storms To Drench Santa Monica: Where To Find Sandbags

SANTA MONICA, CA — The first in a series of upcoming storms will bring rain and mountain snow Wednesday night into Thursday in Santa Monica, according to the National Weather Service.

Following mid-week rain, dry weather is expected in most areas on Friday and Saturday. However, a second and likely much stronger storm will arrive on Sunday with periods of moderate to heavy rain through Tuesday, forecasters said.

"Unfortunately the front and heaviest rain will hit LA county during the morning rush hour," the weather service said.

The storm is expected to bring anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain with the possibility of 4 to 5 inches in foothills and mountains, forecasters predicted. Snow levels are expected to drop to 3,000 feet Thursday night through Sunday.

Santa Monica officials said those living in low-lying areas should prepare accordingly due to the area being prone to flooding. Santa Monica residents were encouraged to prepare sandbags.

Sandbags are available to Santa Monica residents at the following locations:

• 2500 Michigan Ave, Building 8
• Fire Station 1 (1337 7th St.)
• Fire Station 2 (222 Hollister Ave.)
• Fire Station 3 (1302 19th St.)
• Fire Station 5 (2450 Ashland Ave)

Residents are required to bring their IDs and can pick up a maximum of 10 bags. Those collecting sand were also urged to bring their own shovel or tools. Collecting sand from the beach is illegal.
