SMC President Writes About Friday's Heroism

Others use Facebook and other social media to send prayers and condolences.

Almost as soon as the shooting ended on and near the Santa Monica College campus Friday, well wishers took to social media to offer prayers and condolences. Students, alumni, faculty and even the school's president shared messages via Facebook, Twitter and other sources.

"I believe 'heroism' is the word that will become associated with the events of these past few days," wrote Santa Monica College President Chui Tsang. "Heroism on the part of the officers who neutralized the attacker . . . heroism on the part of our staff, faculty and students in the campus library and elsewhere on campus who acted decisively to protect life."

Tsang went on to praise students who protected, comforted and provided support and faculty and staff members who helped accommodate students' end-of-semester needs, arranged for the pick-up of students' belongings, answer phone inquiries, counsel those in need and take action to start work again Monday morning, when the main campus reopened at 7 a.m.

People who know the campus well, former students and faculty members also took to the Internet to share their thoughts.

Former student Johan David Baumeister left a note on the school's Facebook page.

"So shocked right now. My thoughts and prayers are with my alma mater today and with all of the members of the community, both on campus and off campus, who were affected by today's senseless violence," he wrote.

Jim Robinson, who taught English at the school from 1985 to 1992 also wrote.

"Thoughts are with SMC," he said. "Bless the students and instructors and staff."

All the way from York, ME, Elena Zajechowski sent "prayers ... to the families of the people that died tragically. I studied at SMC in the 1980's, great community college in a wonderful city."

And from across the pond, someone who goes by Princess Natti Wade wrote "My thoughts and prayers from the UK are with you SMC. xxxx."

Even local businesses, like the Hotel Carmel, extended condolences.

"We also stand supportive in thought and love with our neighbor survivors and witnesses who are struggling with physical and emotional recovery."

And Norms Restaurant sent a shout out too: "Norms love you, Santa Monica! Thoughts and prayers."

Others shared a link to the SMC Foundation website where people can leave a donation to help cover the cost of a memorial service for shooting victims.

Finally, others reminded people about a Monday evening vigil to take place at 6 p.m. in front of the library on campus mentioned in President Tsang's message.

Another note from the school posted by SMC's Jeff Gordon noted Monday night's event is not a candlelight vigil.

"We ask that you not bring candles—just an open heart. All are welcome."
