Transient Severely Injured in Assault

The assailants were living with the man in an abandoned building near Fifth Street and Colorado Avenue.

An assault last week in a downtown alley left a homeless man with severe injuries to his head and body, the Santa Monica Police Department reported.

The man was reportedly beaten by four transients with whom he was living in an abandoned building. The assailants became upset when the man flirted with one of their girlfriend's, said Sgt. Richard Lewis.

Officers found the man lying in an alley near Fifth Street and Colorado after they received a report of a fight at 11:45 p.m. Friday. "When the suspects heard sirens, they tried to run away and were caught by police as they arrived," Lewis said.
