What's The Best Sandwich In LA? Trust In The Godmother

If you know, you know.

SANTA MONICA, CA — The Godmother of sandwiches—an Italian classic pick from iconic Bay Cities Deli in Santa Monica is getting some extra attention—and appetites.

It's all thanks to a recent tweet thread shared by more than 125,000 people from Jonathan Kramer. Kramer shared some of the tastiest sandwiches in Los Angeles priced at $10.

The results? Super funny.

The Godmother in Santa Monica ranked high, with Kramer recommending to go for the small size, which is priced at $7.50.

Patch reached out to Kramer to find out the inspiration—and what he's willing to wait in line and drive for. It all started with a dream.

"Sandwiches are my favorite lunch and I often complain to my friends about how I wish there were more affordable sandwiches in LA," Kramer told Patch. "The dream is for every neighborhood to have a small deli selling simple $7 sandwiches! So, while eating a homemade sandwich, I just rattled off my favorite cheap sandwiches in a Twitter thread. Mostly as a way for me to keep track of the ones in my area and share them with my friends at the same time."

Then, a Bay Cities and Santa Monica treasure made the list.

"In many ways, Bay Cities is a quintessential neighborhood market and the Godmother is the quintessential sub sandwich done perfectly," Kramer said. "Cold cuts, provolone, veggies, and dressing on great bread. What more could you want?"

He's still surprised by the response from Angelenos so far.

"Oh, I'm floored by the response to the sandwich thread," Kramer said. "The response it got on the first day was insane to me and has only gotten exponentially bigger since then. It has taken on a life of its own and its reputation is now preceding me. People literally all over the world are reading it for some reason. I guess everyone loves a good, cheap sandwich and can't wait to eat more."

Kramer has some more advice.

"If you live with someone, I recommend making sandwiches for each other for lunch, because a sandwich legitimately tastes better when someone else makes it for you," Kramer said.
