Newborn Left at Valley Hospital

A newborn boy was left at a Tarzana hospital Friday as part of the Safe Surrender program, Supervisor Don Knabe announced today via Twitter.

“Great news!” Knabe tweeted.

The baby, placed in county custody, will be matched with a family approved for adoption by the Department of Children and Family Services.

“It’s hard to imagine anyone wanting to give up a child, but this mother bravely made the better choice for her baby boy -- no shame, no blame, no names,” Knabe said.

The Safe Surrender program lets women without fear of prosecution give away infants no more than three days old at any fire station or hospital, as long as the child shows no signs of abuse.

The baby was the 10th given to the county this year and the 123rd since Safe Surrender was started about 13 years ago.

“Thanks to the Safe Surrender program, this little boy has been blessed with the gift of life and now has the opportunity to grow up as part of a loving family,” Knabe said.
