'Character, Strength, Resilience, Humility': Sonoma Valley Hero
Patch and T-Mobile are partnering to celebrate Local Heroes who make life better in California with contributions big and small.

SONOMA VALLEY, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.
This submission comes from Sheila Martin who nominated Lola Jean Martin of Sonoma Valley.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?
Lola had the courage to stand up to bullies and became a hero to her sports teammates, school community and parents. Lola used her courageous voice to speak up about the mistreatment and bullying she and her teammates endured over several seasons by the coaches. She decided to not play volleyball her senior year (after playing 3 years as a varsity starter) because the bullies remained as coaches this season. She suffered mental health issues as a result of all she endured, as did several of her teammates. The stigma associated with athletes and or parents raising concerns prevents many people from speaking up. As we’ve seen in professional sports, many athletes are courageously speaking up about mental health and coach abuse…USA Womens Soccer investigation is the most recent. Lola inspired several of her teammates to courageously speak their truth as well…bringing their concerns about the coaches to the school admin. Lola was recognized by her friends and teammates during the senior night as a person who has supported them! She is a dedicated leader and advocate for change, inspiring her school and community to be fearless and courageous in speaking up and standing up to bullies. She is often recognized as a person who is kind to everyone at school and in her community. When asked about her commitment to her teammates, despite not playing on the team she said “I won’t stop doing nice things for people.” It may not be recognized now all that Lola sacrificed for the betterment of the greater good, but these defining moments show character, strength, resilience, humility, and courage!
