Earth Day Every Day

Kaiser Permanente is committed to reducing the impacts on the environment and encourage others to join in the effort

(Kaiser Permanente)

As a health care organization, Kaiser Permanente recognizes that a healthy environment leads to a healthy community. The work to protect the environment is part of everything the organization does, from the way it powers facilities to how medical supplies and equipment are purchased to support communities.

Kaiser Permanente is aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Our work to meet net-zero emissions, which means reducing greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, goes beyond removing carbon from the energy use and direct emissions.

The goal is to address greenhouse gas emissions created from purchased goods and services, investments, business-related travel and transportation, waste, and employee commuting.

Kaiser Permanente’s newer facilities are being built with low- or non-emitting materials to improve indoor air quality, have a small carbon footprint, and use less water than typical hospitals.

In the Northern California region, there is a continued focus on environmental stewardship through solar panels, installation of low-flow sinks and toilets, utilizing drought-efficient landscaping and reducing waste through recycling and food-composting.

So what can others do to join in the effort to help protect the environment?

Earth Day is a good reminder to be mindful of our impact on the environment, both at work and in our daily lives. By making small changes and adopting sustainable habits, we can contribute to a greener, healthier planet. Here are some ways you and your family can help:

  • Reduce your own carbon footprint by being aware of your electricity usage and when possible use clean energy options.
  • Look for ways to change your daily commute to work or school by walking, riding a bike, carpooling, or using public transportation. This can reduce our fossil fuel use and improve our air quality.
  • Recycle and compost food waste in your home.
  • Try and conserve water use in your home by taking shorter showers and baths. Consider installing water-efficient faucets and toilets.
  • Substitute reusable cloth bags and containers for plastic bottles and bags.

Each one of us plays a crucial role in protecting our planet for future generations. Whether it's reducing our carbon footprint, minimizing waste, or embracing eco-friendly practices, our actions today shape the world we leave behind tomorrow.

Kaiser Permanente is committed to reducing the impacts on the environment and encourage others to join in the effort to be good environmental stewards on Earth Day.
